France 1691B ecu rev 600.jpg

The specimen shown is an écu aux 8 L struck in Rouen during the reign of Louis XIV of France. This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux palmes. Droulers[1] prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced two and a half times that of an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 52,020 "flans neufs" plus an unknown but probably large number of "flans reformés."

Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Gad-216; Dav-3811, KM 275.2, Dr/4 no. 508, Dr/2 no. 396.
