Great Britain 1813 1/3 guinea
This specimen was lot 1345 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,139 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, George III. 1760-1820. 1/3 Guinea 1813, London. Second laureate head. NGC UNC Details. Lightly cleaned." This type was struck 1804-13, presumably to pay soldiers and sailors during the Napoleonic Wars. Domestically, Great Britain operated on paper Bank of England notes; the gold standard would not be resumed until after Waterloo. Guineas were superseded by sovereigns during the reform of 1817.
