Sweden 1757 4 daler
This specimen was lot 1711 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,821.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 4 Daler Plate Money, 1757. Adolf Fredrik (1751-71). 10.5 x 10 in. Scarce (Tingstrom: 71 examples known including 55 pieces from the Nicobar). Stamps well applied with only slight unevenness in the corner stamps. The center stamp is full with only the "4" being slightly weak. The corner stamps displaying one full date and one partial date, one stamp is slightly off the plate. Minor surface corrosion of hardly any consequence. Lovely chocolate patina." In the pre-reform Swedish coinage, 8 öre = one mark and 96 öre = one riksdaler. This type was issued 1753-59 only and is rare, suggesting that the mines were giving out. Millions of four daler plates were made but most were melted down to make other copper or bronze objects.
