Sincona sale 9, lot 4369

This specimen was lot 4369 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 7000 CHF (about US$8,854 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Troisième Republique, 1871-1940. 50 Francs 1900, Paris. Äußerst seltener Jahrgang. Nur 200 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich. (France, third republic, 1871-1940, fifty francs of 1900, Paris mint. Extremely rare date, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1878-1904. Of the 26,945 struck of this rare type, 20,250 are dated 1904, but even the 1904's are expensive. Most survivors are bagmarked AU.

Recorded mintage: 200.

Specification: 16.13 g, 0.900 fine gold, .462 troy oz AGW, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Albert Desiré Barré after a design by Augustin Dupré, this specimen 16,11 g.
