from the Stack's Bowers 2018 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71385

This specimen was lot 71385 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PERU. 1/5 Libra, 1914. Lima Mint. NGC MS-66. Bright, untoned and sharply struck. Interesting repunch on 1 and 4 of date." The gold libra superseded the silver sol as Peru's main unit of currency in 1898. The libra weighed the same as a British sovereign and equalled ten soles. The type was struck 1906-30 and again 1953-69, along with libras and half libras.
