This specimen was lot 1889 in Steve Album sale 16 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA: Elizabeth II, 1952-present, AR 3 pence, 1961, NGC graded Proof 65." The regular issue is common but the proofs are not. The type was struck in large quantities 1955-64 and was the last threepence struck in Australia. An earlier type, struck 1953-54, featured a slightly different obverse legend, "ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRATIA·REGINA." Sterling coinage ceased after 1964 and in 1966, the Australian dollar was introduced.
Recorded mintage: 33,840,000 plus 1,506 proofs.
Specification: 1.41 g, 0.500 fine silver, .0226 troy oz ASW, 16 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Mary Gillick and George Kruger-Gray.
