Steve Album Auction 53, lot 1161

This specimen was lot 1161 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $540. The catalog description[1] noted, "SINTANG: AR gulden, quincunx countermark on West Friesland 1793 AR gulden, tentatively attributed to the Sintang Sultanate in West Kalimantan, deeply toned over porous surfaces, but still attractive, possibly a shipwreck find, very rare, VF." The Sintang Sultanate was a Muslim state that operated in the interior of Borneo 1672-1947, when it was absorbed by the independent state of Indonesia. We don't know when, or if, the area was conquered by the Dutch.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 10.61 g, 0.920 fine silver, this specimen 10.59 g.

Catalog reference: cf. Zeno-330071, KM-unlisted.
