Goldberg sale 116, lot 1450
GB G116-1450r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1450 in Goldberg sale 116 (Los Angeles, June 2020), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Farthing, 1736. George II, 1727-1760. Obverse: Laureate cuirassed bust left. Reverse: Britannia left with pike and shield. Date in exergue. Mint state with a little mint red, glossy surfaces. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown." This type is listed for 1730-39 and is fairly common in worn condition. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common thru Very Fine.

Specification: 4.93 g, copper, 23 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: S.3720; KM-572.
