Künker Auction 425, lot 2008

This specimen was lot 2008 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$2,124 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · ANHALT, FÜRSTENTUM Wolfgang, Johann IV., Georg III. und Joachim, 1516-1551. Taler 1539, Harzgerode. Ausbeute der Grube Birnbaum in Harzgerode. RR Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, leicht überarbeitet, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Teutoburger Münzauktion 13, Borgholzhausen 2003, Nr. 1385 und der Sammlung Hermann Brede, Bremen, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 305, Osnabrück 2018, Nr. 2919. (Germany, principality of Anhalt, joint issue of Wolfgang, John IV, George III and Joachim, 1516-51, thaler of 1539, Harzgerode mint, for the Peartree mine in Harzgerode. Very rare, planchet defects, lightly tooled, very fine.)"

We believe this rare type to be the first thaler from this state. The principality of Anhalt was partitioned in the Middle Ages but many of the lines lapsed over time. Anhalt-Bernburg was united with Anhalt-Dessau in 1468 then Anhalt-Dessau was united with Anhalt-Zerbst in 1561, leaving Joachim Ernst and Bernhard as sole rulers. Bernhard died without issue in 1570 and Joachim Ernst followed him in 1586. His seven sons ruled Anhalt jointly until 1603, when the five surviving brothers partitioned it once again.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 27,90 g.
