Australia 1931 florin

from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 6382

This specimen was lot 6382 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Florin, 1931-(M). Melbourne Mint. George V. PCGS MS-65. A sharply struck and fully lustrous Gem, with a bare hint of toning." This type was struck for Australia at Melbourne, London, Heaton and Sydney 1911-36. Production was substantial yet most dates are scarce in nice condition. Australia maintained the sterling silver standard until 1945, years after Great Britain had debased her coins to 0.500 fine. A commemorative (KM 31), honoring the opening of the new Parliament in Canberra, was extensively saved and is today much more available than the regular issue (KM 27).
