This specimen was lot 700 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €6000 (about US$9,158 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ARTOIS, Comté, Philippe IV (1621-1640), AR ducaton, 1635, Arras. Premier type. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite, une grande fraise au col. Revers: Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Extrêmement Rare. Ex HSA 1111. Très Beau. (county of Artois, Philip IV (1621-65), silver ducaton of 1635, Arras mint, first type. Obverse: armored bust to right with ruffed collar. Reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, Golden Fleece below. Extremely rare, very fine.)"
Ducatons issued from Flanders and Brabant are reasonably available but those of Artois are rare with only a few dates known. The Arras mint was lost to the French in 1640.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver; this specimen is 31.39 g.
