Sincona sale 87, lot 3292

This specimen was lot 3292 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,347 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"USA, 10 Dollars 1897 O, New Orleans. Liberty head type. PCGS AU58."

This specimen is one of a type struck at the New Orleans mint 1841-60, 1879-1906. Issues are also recorded from Philadelphia (1839-1907), San Francisco (1854-89, 1892-1907), Carson City (1870-84, 1890-93) and Denver (1906-07). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. The 1897-O is a relatively available issue in AU55 to MS61 grades. It is scarce in MS62 and very scarce in MS63.

Specification: 16.71 g, 0.900 fine gold, .483 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
