Sincona sale 88, lot 8

This specimen was lot 8 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Safavid Dynasty, Solayman I. 1079-1105 AH (1668-1694). 20 Shahi 1099 AH (1688), Isfahan Mint. Sehr selten, Vorzüglich, Überdurchschnittlich gut ausgeprägt, Leicht gereinigt; Extraordinarily well struck, Very rare, Extremely fine, Lightly cleaned. From the Bakhtiar collection, Spink & Son, London 1996."

This was the largest denomination struck in silver in early modern Iran. Altho Safi II, Sulayman and Husayn are recorded as having issued this denomination, all are rare. This denomination is also noted from Tiflis and Qazvin. A coin this size is too large to be struck by the hammer on a production basis.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 36.95 g, silver, this specimen 36.72 g.

Catalog reference: Album 2664, KM 229, BMC O 57 var. Farahbakhsh 107. Rabino 17.
