Sincona sale 88, lot 165

This specimen was lot 165 in Sincona sale 88 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 45,000 CHF (about US$59,463 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Qajar Dynasty, Fath-'Ali Shah, 1212-1250 AH (1797-1834). 5 Toman 1232 AH (1817), Kermanshahan Mint. Von grösster Seltenheit. Einziges bekanntes Exemplar. Unikat, Henkel- und Tragespuren; Of the highest rarity. The only known specimen. Unique. NGC AU Details. Mount removed, traces of wear. Purchased from Spink & Son, London, in 1983."

This rare gold denomination was struck at several mints during the reign of Fath 'Ali Shah. This style and weight standard is listed in the SCWC as type U. The elaborate engraving and careful strike suggests that it was intended for presentation.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
