Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1240
JE160-1240r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1240 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €170 (about US$215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Léopold II (1790-1792), Cu double liard, 1791, Bruxelles. D/ B. l. et dr. à d. R/ Inscription dans une couronne. Rare. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Leopold II, 1790-92, copper double liard of 1791, Brussels mint. Obverse: laureate and draped bust right; reverse: inscription under a crown. Rare, very fine.)"

This type was struck at Brussels 1791-92 and is common. The angel face on the reverse is the Brussels mintmark. The SCWC states that there were 216 liards in a kronenthaler. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.

Recorded mintage: 210,234.

Specification: 7.5 g, copper, 27 mm diameter, engraved by Théodore Van Berckel; this specimen is 7,63 g.

Catalog reference: KM 53, W. 1165; Jaeckel 90; VH 878.
