The centavos of 1950-69 (KM 417) were 2 g, 16 mm diameter. INflation, grinding away at the value of the peso, was threatening to make the coin worth more as scrap metal than as a medium of exchange. This design (KM 418) was reduced to 1.5 grams and struck in this form in 1970 and 1972-73. It did not help and the denomination was abandoned thereafter.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000.

Specification: 1.5 g, brass, 13 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 418.
