Sincona sale 80, lot 3104

Oman, long a British protectorate, achieved full independence in 1971. Coinage began that year. She has watched enviously as her neighbors, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, harvest billions of dollars by selling oil, of which little occurs in Omani territory. This specimen was lot 3104 in Sincona sale 80 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$599 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"OMAN, Quabus bin Sa'id, 1970-2020. 20 Baisa 1394 AH (1974). Goldabschlag zu Präsentationszwecken. Sehr selten. Nur 250 Exemplare geprägt. FDC. (sultanate of Oman, Quabus bin Sa'id, 1970-2020, twenty baisa [sic] of AH 1394. Off metal strike in gold for presentation. Very rare. Only 250 pieces struck, Uncirculated.)"

This type, a twenty-five baisa, was struck 1972-75 solely for presentation. Circulation coinage of this design was struck intermittently 1975-97.

Recorded mintage: 250.

Specification: 5.96 g, 0.917 fine gold, 18 mm diameter, this specimen 6.07 g.

Catalog reference: KM 45.
