The specimen is one of a type issued for the province of Utrecht. Double ducatons (Dav-1828) exist but are very rare. Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Utrecht, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overijssel, West Friesland and Zeeland, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom. This specimen was lot 1635 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $4,406.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Utrecht, United Netherlands, 'rider' ducatoon, 1781/0, rare, encapsulated NGC MS 64 PL. Choice full luster (prooflike) and totally devoid of wear or marks, but also with traces of 1/0 overdate (not listed in slab), second highest grade in NGC census for the date and the ONLY specimen designated PL for the whole 130-year date run! NGC #2008848-232."
Recorded mintage: 86,000 for 1781-82. The type was last issued in 1794.
Specification: 32.78 g, 0.941 fine silver, .991 troy oz ASW, obliquely reeded edge.
