Peru 1851 8 reales rev DSLR.jpg

The specimen shown is one of a series struck at the Lima mint 1841-52. At this point, the branch mints Cuzco and Arequipa were winding down their operations after being very busy in the 1820's and 30's. The last Cuzco 8 reales was issued in 1840 (KM 142.9) and the last Arequipa 8 reales was in 1841 (KM 142.11, an extreme rarity). The Pasco mint was open and made an irregular issue of 4 reales 1843-57 (KM 151.4 thru KM 151.10). Even the later Lima issues are less prolific than the 1828-40 period, with the type shown valued about triple the price of the earlier issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown. This date is priced approximately double the commonest date (1843).

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 142.10.
