Ponterio sale 168, lot 40792

This specimen was lot 40792 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Riksdaler, 1823. NGC AU-58. Large head variety." This type was struck 1818-27 and is a fairly expensive type. This is a common date for the type. Carl XIV Johan was originally Charles Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's generals. He married into the Swedish royal family and became king himself in 1818. The present dynasty is descended from him.
