Steve Album sale 38, lot 2695
India SA38-2695r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2695 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $95.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH INDIA: Victoria, Empress, 1876-1901, AR 2 annas, 1879-C, bold strike, better date/mintmark, EF." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1877-1901 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the smallest silver denomination. It is distinguished from the type issued 1862-76 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA EMPRESS" instead of "VICTORIA QUEEN." For 1879, Calcutta used an incuse mintmark and Bombay used a dot. The Bombya issue is very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: 1.46 g, .917 silver, .043 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-488.
