This type was struck 1948-49 for the Portuguese colony of Angola on the west coast of Africa south of the Congo. The 1949 is considered very scarce. A smaller twenty centavos (KM 78) was struck in 1962, the last of the denomination. After a protracted struggle, Angola obtained its independence in 1975 and then dissolved into civil war as various factions contended for control.
