Goldberg sale 128, lot 1731
G128-1731r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1731 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. ½ Teston, 1570-M (Toulouse). Charles IX, 1560-1574. Laureate head left. Reverse: Crowned arms of France, between two crowned C's., date in Roman numerals. PCGS graded Extremely Fine Detail (Scratch)." Sombart[2] reports three known in his survey, making this a very scarce date. The half teston had a face value of six sols tournois.

Recorded mintage: 275,400[2], mostly testons.

Specification: 4.79 g, .899 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Sb 4604, Dupl-1064; Ciani-1366.
