This dime was introduced in 1946 to honor president Franklin Roosevelt who had died in office the previous year. It was issued in silver 1946-64 and converted to copper-nickel clad copper in 1965, in which alloy it is still being minted. The mint suppressed mintmarks for 1965-67. The San Francisco mint has been responsible for the production of proofs since 1968 and began manufacturing and marketing 90% silver proof dimes in 1992.
