Papal St Fr-277 rev Tom Fi.jpg

This type, struck 1858-65 at Rome, is not listed as rare but seldom turns up. The edge lettering was updated mid-year on the anniversary of the reign of the pope. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.

Recorded mintage: 226,000 (year XVI and XVII).

Specification: 1.73 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-277; Pagani-382; KM 1361, Ber-3308.
