Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 4050

This specimen was lot 4050 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $235. The catalog description^[1] noted, "LIECHTENSTEIN. 5 Kronen, 1915. NGC MS-64. Small toning spot on obverse, but otherwise a very bright and lustrous piece with sharp details throughout. Mintage of only 10,000 pieces. A lovely example of this type." This type was issued 1900, 1904, 1910 and 1915 in small numbers but enough were saved that it is only somewhat scarce today. Liechtenstein, a tiny country sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria, has been ruled for generations by a Austrian family that did not even visit its domain until after World War One. The collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the loss of that family's estates in the crash forced the prince, Johan II, to focus on his tiny domain. Altho the prince still issues commemorative coins on occasion, the locals use Swiss coinage in daily commerce.
