Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 75183
SB1122-75183r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75183 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Rupia, 1801. Goa Mint. Maria I. NGC AU-58. Exceptionally produced and preserved, this standout Rupia has bountiful striking detail in the posthumous portrait of Queen Maria I and gorgeous original surfaces that verge on Mint State. Subtle and delightful pastel tones have developed over the luster, enriching visual appeal. We last offered this example in our November 2015 Baltimore sale and have not had handled any others since that date. The sole finest of th[r]ee that NGC has certified, the other two both grading Fine." This type was struck 1796-1807. In 1869, the local mints were closed in favor of machine-struck coinage from the British mints in India, at which time the rupia was made equal to 16 tanga.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.8 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-205; Gomes-36.08.
