Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 56435
SB823-56435r.jpg

This specimen was lot 56435 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. 1/2 Pardao (150 Reis), 1780. Goa Mint. Jose I. PCGS VF-30." By 1780, Portuguese holdings in India were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. The half pardao was one quarter rupia. This type was struck 1777 and 1780 but is not common. The coins are so crude that collectible specimens are few.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.80-2.95 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-181.
