Sincona sale 54, lot 551

This specimen was lot 551 in Sincona sale 54 (Zurich, May 2019), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$774 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Elizabeth II. 1952-2007. 1000 Dollar 1986. Royal Visit. Polierte Platte. FDC. (Hong Kong, Elizabeth II, 1952-2007, one thousand dollars of 1986, for the royal visit. Choice Proof.)"

Hong Kong commenced a series of gold commemoratives featuring the animals of the Chinese zodiac. This one honors a Royal Visit. Another NCLT honored the year of the Tiger (KM 54). British coinage for Hong Kong ceased in 1997 when the island was returned to China.

Recorded mintage: 20,000 + 12,000 proofs.

Specification: 15.97 g, 0.917 fine gold (= 2 pounds), this specimen 15.79 g.

Catalog reference: KM 57. Fr-13.
