The specimen shown is of a type common in all grades. The type was struck 1899-1900 in a last attempt to retain silver in the coinage. Later in 1900, the one real was converted to copper-nickel. Guatemala was the last country in Latin America to abandon the real, in 1912, a reflection of the extreme conservatism of the peasant society.
