This specimen was part of lot 50582 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $529. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. 1/2 Penny, 1960. PCGS PROOF-63 RB." New Zealand did not receive her own coinage until 1933, British coins being used heretofore. Issue of pennies and half pennies did not begin until 1940. This type, with a visible shoulder fold in the queen's dress, was minted 1956-65. All dates are common but proofs are rare. The coinage was decimalized in 1967.
Recorded mintage: 2,400,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: bronze, 25.3 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 23.2.
