Sincona sale 50, lot 1183

This specimen was lot 1183 in Sincona sale 50 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$12,062 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Basel. Reichsmünzstätte Basel. Interregnum (1439-1440). Goldgulden o. J. Reichsapfel im Spitzdreipass. +MONETA•NOVA•BASILIENS Rv. •SANCTA-•MARIA• Madonna mit Christuskind. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön. (free city of Basel, interregnum of 1439-40, undated goldgulden. Obverse: imperial orb in trilobe; reverse: madonna and Child. Extremely rare, Very fine.)"

Altho the Swiss cantons had won de facto independence from the Empire by the late fifteenth century, the fact was not officially recognized until 1648, when the confederation left the empire by the treaties of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War.
