from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 23016

This specimen was lot 23016 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $192. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Groat, ND (1480-83). Heraldic Cinquefoil. Edward IV, Second Reign (1471-83). PCGS EF-45 Secure Holder. Type with rose on breast. Deep, attractive tone adorns the surfaces with pleasing central detail and legends that partially run off the flan. From the John Whitney Walter Collection. Ex: Stack's auction, October 22-23, 1981." This type was struck 1480-83 at London with a cinquefoil as the mintmark. The groat (cognate of "great", meaning large) was four pence.
