Heritage sale 3041, lot 32331

This specimen was lot 32331 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Sigismund I the Old 'Crown' 3 Grosze (Trojak) 1528 MS61 NGC, the first Polish coin with the portrait of the King. Obv. Crowned and armored bust of King Sigismund I right. Rev. Crowned eagle with head right. A seldom offered coin, conditionally very rare, and almost unknown in the exemplary condition. The strike is slightly uneven, as is normal for these early, crudely produced issues. The patina is an even reddish-gray, and no significant flaws are apparent. Undoubtedly, one of, if not the nicest surviving example of this important early type." The kingdom of Poland came under the rule of the king of Sweden, Sigismund III, in 1587. He converted to Roman Catholicism to accept the Polish crown, which caused the Swedish diet to depose him. He invaded Sweden in an attempt to reclaim his throne but was unsuccessful. The expenses of the war damaged and weakened the Polish monarchy, but the main source of Polish weakness was the greed and selfishness of the Polish nobility.
