Sincona sale 63, lot 1270

This specimen was lot 1270 in Sincona sale 63 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$282 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Vatican - Church State, Pius IX. 1846-1878. Scudo d'oro 1859 / Anno XIII R, Roma. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Papal States, Pius IX, 1846-78, gold scudo of 1859, year 18, Rome mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

This type, struck 1858-65 at Rome, is not listed as rare but seldom turns up. The edge lettering was updated mid-year on the anniversary of the reign of the pope. The coinage was reformed to use centesimi and lire in 1867 but the Papal States were annexed by Italy in 1870 and the series ended.

Recorded mintage: 103,000.

Specification: 1.73 g, .900 fine gold, 16.3 mm diameter, this specimen 1.72 g.

Catalog reference: Ber-3308, KM 1361, Mont. 116. Pagani 383. Fr-272.
