In 1803, native forces made good their rebellion against French rule, marking the only successful slave rebellion in the Western hemisphere. Turmoil did not cease with independence as the United States withheld its recognition and various factions contended for power. This type was struck 1904-1905. President Nord Alexis also appears on similar 10 centimes (KM 54), 20 centimes (KM 55) and 50 centimes (KM 56) coins. This specimen was lot 4234 in Goldberg sale 104 (Los Angeles, June 2018), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "Haiti. 20 Centimes, 1907. Struck at Waterbury, Connecticut. Highest graded. NGC graded MS-66. Collection of Foreign Coins Struck at United States Mints."
