This specimen was lot 33714 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "British India. Victoria Rupee 1884-C MS66 NGC. Calcutta mint. A spectacular coin with pristine surfaces and full mint bloom. An unheard of grade for the type and date." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1877-1901 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the largest silver denomination. It is distinguished from the type issued 1862-76 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA EMPRESS" instead of "VICTORIA QUEEN."
Recorded mintage: 11,642,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 11.66 g, .917 fine silver, .343 troy oz AGW.
