Kunker sale 263, lot 1264

This specimen was lot 1264 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €510 (about US$659 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, HERZOGTUM (Ernestiner nach dem Verlust der Kurwürde) Johann Friedrich II. 1557-1567, gestorben 1595 in Gefangenschaft. Taler 1563, Saalfeld. R Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxony, after losing the electorate, John Frederick II, 1557-67, thaler of 1563, Saalfeld mint. Scarce, very fine. The duke died in captivity in 1595.)"

This type is listed for 1558-66 and is scarce but not rare. This division of the Saxon lands lasted 1572-1638. Saxe-Neu-Gotha dates from 1640.
