This specimen was lot 1246 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $646. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1708. Rennas Mint. NGC AU-58. Louis XIV (1643-1715). Light adjustment marks on the reverse." Shown is a écu aux huit L, deuxieme type ("écu with 8 L's, 2nd type") struck at the Rennes mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. The type was struck until 1709; there are also ¼ and ½ écus struck during this period with this design. This date is scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
