This specimen was lot 22111 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGOLA. 1/2 Macuta, 1853. NGC MS-66 BN. The single finest certified example. Pleasing mahogany surfaces; a superb gem in every respect." A similar type (KM 58) was issued in 1858 and 1860 for Peter V. This type was struck for Angola in 1848, 1851 and 1853 in Lisbon. The Portuguese landed in 1491 and immediately made the region a major slaving station, which trade would not end until the 1850's when the British Royal Navy interdicted the trade. The later nineteenth century was devoted to resource extraction and fending off attempts by the other colonizing powers to seize territory.
Recorded mintage: 143,000.
Specification: 19 g, copper, 37 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-56; Gomes-M2.01.03.
