Stack's Bowers ANA sale, lot 30460

This specimen was struck in Paris for the French colonies in the Caribbean. The type was struck 1839-44. There is a similar ten centimes. The success of this issue was used as a precursor to the large copper issues of Napoleon III in France during the 1850's. This specimen was lot 30460 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $260. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH COLONIES. 5 Centimes, 1843-A. NGC MS-66 BN. Fully lustrous surfaces with iridescent blue toning over most, some areas of mint orange around devices. Very attractive."

Recorded mintage: 202,000.

Specification: bronze, designed by Nicolas Tiolier.
