Peru 1809-L JP 2 reales

This specimen was lot 73365 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PERU. 2 Reales, 1809-LM JP. Lima Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-35 Gold Shield. Large (imaginary) bust/FERDIN type. Tied with just one other example for the finest graded in the PCGS census, this charming minor--featuring a rather imaginative bust of the still-new king--offers pleasing toning and some subtle brilliance remaining." This specimen is one of a series struck 1808-11 using the "imaginary bust" during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808-33). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris^[2] noted finding more Peruvian two reales of Ferdinand VII than that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is not rare.
