Sincona sale 87, lot 2261

This specimen was lot 2261 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$640 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Coburg-Eisenach, Herzogtum, Johann Kasimir und Johann Ernst II. 1572-1633. Taler 1582, Saalfeld. Vorzüglich. Aussergewöhnlich gut ausgeprägt mit feiner Patina. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Casimir and John Ernest II, 1572-1633, thaler of 1582, Saalfeld mint. Extremely fine, Extraordinary well struck with nice patina.)"

The duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach was one of the endless reshuffles of the Saxon duchies and likely lasted only for this set of brothers. This issue could equally be filed under Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. This type is listed for 1577-86. The division of Erfurt in 1572 permanently splintered Ernestine Thuringia into fragments which were not reunited until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1920.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.13 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB32, Kozinowski/Otto/Ruß 12.2, Dav-9756.
