This specimen was lot 5339 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Salzburg, Erzbistum Ernst von Bayern, 1540-1554. Dukat 1546. Vierfeldiges Wappen, darüber die Jahreszahl. Rv. Der stehende hl. Rudbertus mit Mitra, Bischofsstab und Salzfass von vorn, zu seinen Füssen kleines Wappen. Schrötlingsriss. Sehr schön. (Archbishopric of Salzburg, Ernest of Bavaria, 1540-54, ducat of 1546. Obverse: quartered arms, date above; reverse: standing Saint Rudbert with mitre, bishop's staff, arms below. Hairlined, very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold; this specimen is 3,43 g.
