Jean Elsen sale 123, lot 828
France JE123-828r.jpg

This specimen was lot 828 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €320 (about US$465 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AV 20 francs, 1807 W, Lille. Tête nue. Type transitoire à la grosse tête. 5181 p. frappées. Rare. Griffe au droit. Beau à Très Beau. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14) gold twenty francs of 1807, Lille mint, bare head, transitional type to the large head, 5181 pieces struck. Rare, obverse scratch, good to very good.)"

Gold coins of the French branch mints are very scarce as a class and probably underpriced. This type was struck 1807 only at four mints of which only Paris is common.

Recorded mintage: 5,163[2].

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered *DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE*.

Catalog reference: Gad-1023a, F.514/4, KM A687.
