This specimen was lot 21023 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $6,325. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cromwell Crown 1658/7, AU55 NGC, advanced diebreak across the lower neck of the Lord Protector, medium gray toning with hues of bluish gold, a number of scattered abrasions but none is serious; a nice mid-level example of this classic first milled crown, dies by Thomas Simon. From the Highlands Park Collection of British Coins." This type, which is so rare as to be regarded as a pattern, particularly considering the exquisite diework and full strike on the specimen shown here, most untypical of English coins of the period. Earlier crowns of the commonwealth (KM 392, struck 1649-56) are not nearly so well made.
