Stack's Bowers ANA sale, lot 1115

This specimen was lot 1115 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. Goldgulden, 1523-HA. Hermannstadt Mint. Ludwig II (1516/26). PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder. Neatly struck with virtually no doubling. Attractive satiny luster throughout. From the Joseph Vas Collection." Ludwig II was the last king of Hungary and died at the battle of Mohacs in 1526, leaving his domain to the mercy of the Turks and the Hapsburgs. This type is listed for 1516-27 and is scarce.
