Sincona sale 35, lot 5453

This specimen was lot 5453 in Sincona sale 35 (Zurich, October 2016), where it sold for 30,000 CHF (about US$35,612 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Zurich | Stadt, Goldgulden o. J. (1512-1515). Münzmeister Paul Sitkust. "CIVITATIS. (city of Zürich, undated goldgulden circa 1512-1515, mintmaster Paul Sitkust. Obverse: the emperor Charlemagne enthroned, with crown and halo, brandishing a sword; reverse: imperial eagle supports the city arms. Extremely rare, About extremely fine.)"

Altho the Swiss cantons had won de facto independence from the Empire by the late fifteenth century, the fact was not officially recognized until 1648, when the confederation left the empire by the treaties of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.23 g.
