This specimen was lot 2552 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "MYSORE: Tipu Sultan, 1782-1799, AV fanam, Patan, AM1219 (1790), Mauludi date above mintname // large Persian H (for Haider Ali, father of Tipu Sultan), lovely golden luster, PCGS graded MS63." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj. The Mauludi Era (AM) was a calendar invented and used only by Tipu Sultan and it lapsed after his death in battle in 1799. This type was struck AM1197-1201, 1215-1223.
