The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Santiago, Chile, 1981-89. In 1960, the peso was dropped in favor of the escudo, with 1 escudo = 1000 pesos. The escudo itself was abandoned in 1975 for a return to the peso, with 1 new peso = 100 escudos. In 1973, the regime of Salvador Allende was overthrown by Grl. Augusto Pinochet. In the process of extirpating what the military perceived as a serious Communist threat, the most atrocious human rights abuses were perpetrated. The obverse celebrates the regime's victory over subversion.
